I can only begin the process of saving myself when I surrender to the reality that I can’t. And what greater place to surrender that reality than to an infant who surrendered Himself to me so that I might surrender myself to Him.

About This Quote

In his second book, Beck gave a step-by-step formula for how to find happiness. It was the first step that really stuck with me, and it’s probably the most important one to remember. The idea is that you have to surrender yourself to God. You have to be willing to love Him more than you love yourself so that you can begin the process of saving yourself from the despair you feel when you think about all the ways your life could be better.

In this moment, as you read this, you are not as free as you want to be. You could allow yourself to be happy right now if only you were willing to give up the false hope that things will get better. This is part of the struggle we all face – we want instant gratification and we want it everywhere except in the places that will truly make us happy.

I know that I used to live a life filled with a lot of discontentment. But I also lived a life filled with joy and excitement. I found meaning in my life by surrendering myself to God and learning how to love Him more than I love myself.

In doing so, I was able to live contentedly all around me despite knowing that things could always be better.
